EVENT OVERVIEW

The overall goal of this program is to raise heart health awareness among women. It is well-known that New York State has one of the highest rates of cardiovascular disease in the nation. However, many still believe that heart disease is “a “man’s disease” and that women do not need to worry about getting it. The fact is that women do need to be aware of the prevalence of heart disease among women, and they need to know what they can do about it.

LEWAC will raise awareness of this important issue by presenting a unique luncheon program for women, entitled “Hattitude – Hats Off To Heart Health!” The program will take place Saturday, May 1, 2010 at 11:30AM at Adam’s Mark in downtown Buffalo.

The theme is hats with an attitude – “Hattitude!” This exciting event will offer women an opportunity to show off their favorite hat, while learning about heart health, how heart disease affects women, risk factors for heart disease, and how to live a hearthealthy life. It will take place in a “lunch & learn” fun atmosphere. Select women will share stories about their favorite hat and the personal meaning it has for them. A gift basket auction will be held throughout the luncheon, and a number of health incentives will be given promoting healthy choices and a healthy lifestyle.

Featured will be guest speaker Icilma Fergus, MD, FACC, Head of Cardiology at Harlem Hospital in New York City. Dr. Fergus will present a detailed discussion of women’s heart health issues, addressing all of the points mentioned above.

This program will help LEWAC succeed in raising awareness about heart health for women, reaching up to 400 women - mothers, daughters, sisters and friends.
